Mak Hin-Yeung, Antonio

1951-1994, Hong Kong

Introduction

Born in Hong Kong and studied in Goldsmith’s College, School of Art, University of London, Antonio Mak Hin-Yeung is situated uniquely in Hong Kong's art history for his reflection of a broader cultural and historical context. His work challenges traditional narratives of art with a satirical touch and engages with the complexities of life and reality by exploring the interaction between opposites and the coexistence of contradictions. Mak is most notable for his sculptures and his technical mastery of materials, in particular bronze. Employing bronze-casting methods with wax moulds that he learnt in the UK and New York, his sculptures are often small in sizes. Made with layers of bronze sheets, this method has enabled him to create works that are texturally rich while evoking a sense of frailty of human existence.

Due to his premature passing, his works have been under appreciated, with his last, major exhibition taking place at Hong Kong Museum of Art in 2008. Through this carefully selection of his iconic sculptures and drawings in our Kabinett we hope to shed light on his artistic accomplishments and significance.

Major collections: M+, Hong Kong; Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong; Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taipei, Taiwan.
