Zhang Yu
Introduction
Of his many famous series, Fingerprints is distinguished for the rupture Zhang Yu made with the brush, transitioning the application of pigment to his index finger and maintaining it as the sole tool of creation. As he explains in the interview reproduced in his 2010 AFA catalogue, the fingerprints method and format allow him the ideal vehicle for exploring the relationship between self-identity, time and existence. Zhang Yu has developed the series across multiple media, from the original works on paper, to video, large-scale installation, innovative combinations such as glass and fingernail polish, interactive public projects, and sculpture. Over the past three years, Zhang Yu has focused largely on "Fingerprints," undertaking large-scale projects in different academic institutions throughout Taiwan, including a socially interactive element whereby thousands of students in Taichung placed their fingerprints upon the university's glass entry doors. "Fingerprints" was featured at the recent major exhibition Post-Brushwork Era at the Guangdong Museum of Art (2018) and previously at the Today Art Museum Beijing 2012 and Art Museum of Rome in 2011.
Zhang's works are collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Chinese Culture Center, San Francisco, USA; Benetton Museum, Venice, Italy; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Chengdu Modern Art Museum, Chengdu, China; Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, to name a few. His work is featured in the two-stop travelling show The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China which travels from the Los Angeles County Museum to the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago in 2019.
