Introduction
Alisan Fine Arts is honoured to present recent works by Chinyee, a Chinese abstract expressionist artist based in New York. Chinyee has had a long career of solo and group exhibitions in the US and Asia since 1965. Her bold and colourful yet graceful works were included in the 1997 renowned traveling exhibition “Asian Traditions Modern Expressions: Asian American Artist and Abstraction 1945 – 1970,” curated by Jeffery Wechsler, Senior Curator of Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in the US. The show toured for two years throughout the US, Japan and Taiwan. Wechsler has praised her works:

“Picture by picture, Chinyee invites the viewer to re-experience the delight, the sense of surprise, and the onrush of feelings that affected her during the painting process. It is a particularly generous and affecting gift.” (‘Chinyee: The Wonder of Change’ by Jeffrey Wechsler, “Chinyee Retrospective Exhibition 1965-1995”, Taipei, 1995, p.15)
In 2007, Alisan organized her 50-year retrospective “A Lyrical Journey” at the Shanghai Art Museum where over 90 works from 1953 – 2007 were on display, tracing her long distinguished career. This is the second solo exhibition we will be having for Chinyee in Hong Kong and will be presenting 38 recent works including both oil on canvas and watercolour on paper and collage. Of her new works the artist and Jeffery Wechsler says:
“It is my hope that looking at my recent works, one may see enraptured colors, meditated forms and scribbled gestural lines - a visual excitement.” (Chinyee)

“Expanding upon and invigorating basic themes and techniques that have occupied her for over five decades, Chinyee’s recent work moves gracefully among the various media of oil painting, watercolor and collage. From image to image, her overall production reflects a natural blending of opposites: subtlety balanced by exuberance, contemplation balanced by spontaneity.”(Jeffrey Wechsler)

The official opening of the show will be on 24 April, Wed at 6-7:30pm at Hong Kong Arts Centre, The Pao Galleries 4/F and will run from April 24 – 30, 2013. Officiating the opening will be Mr. Stephen M. Young (Consul General, U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong) and Mrs. Cissy Pao Watari, BBS (Honorary President, Board Member & Chairman of the Arts Programme Committee, Hong Kong Arts Centre).
