Cui Zifan: Master of the Unbridled Brush

Prince's Building, Hong Kong
Past 1992-03-10 - 1992-03-24

As the expert sinologist Lars Berglund stated in his 20th Century Painting and Calligraphy catalog, Cui Zifan has been successful at projecting a sense false 'clumsiness'(ZHOU). Before an artist can paint as though he were unskilled and untrained he needs to be a most skilled and highly trained artist so as to know what rules may be broken and ignored. By painting in a very direct and simplistic way, Cui manages to endow himself with a child's natural, uninhibited, and spontaneous brush. And there can be nothing more free and pure than the painting of a child.
